Writing tools
Story inventory.
When deciding what to write, Susan guides her clients by having them ask themselves what impact do they want to have on the reader. She shares how doing a story inventory using index cards can help the writer organize and decide what topic to write about.

Learn how Susan has clients organize their stories by category using the three P’s: professional, personal, and passion.

Clients create a timeline of their life in 10-year increments. It can be either a vertical or horizontal timeline, but Susan says creating a horizontal timeline where positive events are above the line and negative events are below can be helpful.

Susan shares how people used to in the pre-smartphone days take photos of important events and how going back to old photos can help trigger memories and stories.

Pitfalls to avoid:

  1. Thinking your book is for everyone. Everyone is not your target audience. Have a clear definition of your audience, their needs, their wants. For example, do they want entertainment? Know your audience!
  2. Not getting enough help. Hire and editor to help you polish your book. Get a graphics designer to create your book cover. Don’t go it alone.
  3. Don’t expect a big publishing hour to pick up your book. Find a good independent publisher.

Susan also shares that she loves to go sea kayaking and meditates to rejuvenate, relax, and recharge.

Susan is inspired by her clients’ courage, tenacity, and commitment to sharing their stories.
