Finding Your True Voice

In this All Things Relax with Sandi D. podcast episode, Sandi talks about a writers workshop that she took, Your True Voice, through the Writer’s Center based in Bethesda, Maryland, her old stomping ground. Laura Oliver, an author, developmental book editor and writing mentor led the workshop.

Laura says it is easier for writers to come up with a unique voice than to come up with a unique subject. Writers usually use their natural voice when addressing someone they trust. She gave the following writing prompt during the ‘Your True Voice’ workshop:

“Begin writing a letter to someone you trust completely (dead or alive) confessing to something you long for.” It can be about anything, fame, having better hair, a different childhood.

One of the best insights Laura shared is the simplest. Writers tend to write in a natural, true voice when writing about the things they are passionate about. This is something blogging and business coach Faith Mariah says all the time in her mastermind group.

If you are interested in taking a writing workshop from the comfort of your home, the Writer’s Center in Bethesda, Maryland has writers workshops available in the virtual space on a variety of topics for all levels.
